The Story of the Nylstroom Mark

 

Every great community story begins with a need, and the story of the Nylstroom Mark began with the determination to help local farmers survive. In the early days, there was no market, no stalls, and no grand plans. There were simply three farmers and a WhatsApp group. Anne knew local farmers who were struggling to get their produce directly to customers and believed there had to be a better way. What started as a small effort to advertise fresh farm produce through a community WhatsApp group quickly took on a life of its own. Almost overnight, the group grew to more than 500 clients who were eager to support local farmers and buy directly from the source.

 

The demand was overwhelming and inspiring. Soon, customers wanted a central place where they could meet the farmers face-to-face and collect their produce. This led to the first gathering point beneath the trees opposite Hoërskool Nylstroom, where farmers met customers for three Saturdays. There were no craft stalls, food vendors, or entertainment. It was simply farmers helping families, and families helping farmers. As interest continued to grow, a safer and more suitable location became necessary. Through the vision and support of Frans Botha, the market found a new home near the Abraham Kriel Children's Home from October 2025 until December 2025. What had started as a produce collection point slowly began transforming into something much bigger.

 

Then came the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak in South Africa. Many farmers, small businesses, and independent producers suddenly faced enormous challenges. Traditional sales channels became uncertain, and people needed alternative ways to reach customers. What had begun as a simple support network for farmers evolved into a survival mechanism for many local entrepreneurs. Slowly, crafters joined. Small businesses joined. Home industries joined. Families discovered new opportunities. The community rallied around local enterprise, and the market became a place where people could not only buy and sell but also support one another during difficult times. One of the most memorable moments of that first season was the Christmas Flea Market held at Jagkamp on 24 December 2025. It was a celebration of resilience, community spirit, and the remarkable journey that had begun only months before.

 

On 5 January 2026, the market entered a new chapter and officially became the Modimolle Boeremark. The market was warmly hosted by Ons Hoop Waterberg Dienssentrum vir Bejaardes throughout the summer months, creating a vibrant meeting place for residents, visitors, and vendors alike. As winter arrived, the market relocated to Bosveldsig Sentrum, where the covered facilities offered welcome protection from the cold Waterberg weather. During this important transition, the kindness and support of Mr Leon Baard played a significant role in ensuring the market's continued success and stability. By now, the market had become much more than a place to buy vegetables or handmade goods. It had become a community institution. It supported farmers, encouraged entrepreneurship, created opportunities for small businesses, and brought together people from every corner of the Waterberg.

 

Today, in July 2026, another exciting chapter is unfolding. Through the assistance and support of the Modimolle Municipality, the market is in the process of being registered as a Non-Profit Organisation. This milestone opens the door to larger events, stronger partnerships with local businesses, expanded tourism opportunities, and greater community development projects.

With this new vision comes a return to its roots and heritage. The market is now proudly and officially branded as The Nylstroom Mark. From three farmers and a WhatsApp group to a thriving community movement, the Nylstroom Mark stands as a testament to what can happen when ordinary people come together to solve a problem, support one another, and believe in the future of their town. The market's story is not only about trade. It is about perseverance. It is about community. It is about hope.

And this is only the beginning.
